Johnny Greene, president of Boston-based ETS International, recently announced new additions to its sustainability plan that will now include its vehicles. ETS currently has a recycling policy and has significantly reduced its in-office paper consumption and energy use.

In September 2010, the company started beta-testing of the microGreen® oil filter, which was designed to keep oil cleaner for longer and extend the time between full oil changes. Just the microGreen® filter is replaced at 10,000 mile intervals, but the oil isn’t changed until 30,000 miles, saving on maintenance time and expenses. After the initial testing on five Lincoln Town Cars, the company decided to install the filters in its entire 40-vehicle fleet.

“I thought we’d give it a try, not expecting much,” says Greene. “We sent both the test cars’ oil and the oil from our vehicles that have the traditional 5,000-mile changes for independent analysis. The results were surprising: The oil from the cars using microGreen® was actually cleaner at 30,000 miles than the oil from the cars that only drove 5,000 miles. We’re not only saving time and effort on labor but the offset in the carbon footprint is so substantial.”

ETS also finished testing a second product, the BLADE®, which was designed to capture carbon and soot at the tailpipe so it reduces the amount that escapes and pollutes the air. Operators have found a secondary benefit of the product with an increase in fuel efficiency. Greene reports that the beta-testing with the BLADE® on five vehicles averaged about 1.8 to 2.2 mpg savings
.

“With the price of gas today, we’re seeing the return on investment in less than four months and our fleet is moving toward being environmentally friendly,” he says. Scott Pereira, ETS’ mechanic, said he was the company’s biggest skeptic about testing the new products, but is impressed with the results. “I was really shocked about how fast and how well the BLADE® worked,” he says. “I didn’t think it could possibly do what they said it would.” He also notes that he is less bogged down with regular maintenance and can handlethe more important repairs quicker.

“Changing the oil filter literally takes two minutes now.” MTG (www.mtgparts.com) is the exclusive distributor of both products. For more information about ETS, visit www.etsintl.net
