Dornan
Uniforms Turns 85
Last year marked the 85th anniversary for Dornan Uniforms.
Although the “store” has changed from a physical location
in New York City to a home-based, telephone and web
operation run out of Rockville Center, N.Y., the quality
and cost-consciousness that Dornan is known for has
not.
Dornan was founded in 1924 by Harry Dornan to cater
to private chauffeurs. Gabe Piro Sr., father of the
current owner, Gabe Piro Jr., began working for Dornan
in 1925 and took ownership in 1944. The younger Piro,
who grew up in the business, bought the company in 1975.
Throughout the years, the company expanded its offering
to include uniforms for doormen, restaurant and housekeeping
services, as well as ready-to-wear corporate chauffeur
uniforms.
After 9/11, Dornan also began offering promotional items
such as T-shirts, cups, and pens, to name a few. The
Piros have had a longstanding history in the industry.
Piro Sr. was active in the various driver associations
in the 50s and 60s. Piro Jr. later followed his father’s
lead and joined the National Limousine Association,
of which he was a board member. Dornan has always been
loyal to chauffeured transportation. In 2003, Piro decided
to close the New York storefront and operate exclusively
from his home on Long Island.
